“Nika!”
It was her savior on horseback. His dark silhouette cast against the silver moon made her breath catch, relief flooding through her.
“Vasilli!” she cried back.
He rode up to where she stood, caught her arm, and pulled her up on the stallion’s back in front of him. He reined Bellani around and made to ride out of the trees.
“Don’t go back there!” She said, but too late. He’d already stepped Bellani into the clearing.
Just as they emerged, so did the wolves from the cave, their muzzles bloody, marring the pristine white of their coats. Nika gasped. Vasilli’s grip around her waist tightened, but he didn’t turn the horse yet. Bellani sidled with nervous energy as the wolves walked forward. They stopped about ten paces away and stared.
“Vasilli?” Nika whispered.
“Shhh,” he said.
