Scary Sexy - When Two Anti Heroes Get Together
A list of my favorite horror power couples, just in time for Halloween!
Hello, hello, Beautiful Monsters!
Let’s get the obvious question out of the way. Are you dressing up for Halloween? If you are, I definitely need to hear all about it. Furthermore, what are you up to this weekend? Will you be partying, harvest festival-ling, staying in to read, or watching a scary movie? Going back to the costume question, one of my favorite things to see are couples costumes. I think they’re fun, and I’m always amazed at the things people come up with. Hubby and I dressed up as the old tried and true flapper and 1920s gangster one time (about a half a million years ago). I still have the dress!
What’s the best couples costume you’ve ever seen?
All right, my beauties, speaking of fun couples, what about the underrated, monstrous-ly fun villain couples? You know I have a thing for shady characters. When two of them fall in love, it makes romantic little soul give a sappy, swoony sigh. I promised you a list of my favorite pairs that find love on the darker side of the story spectrum, and here it is, at long last.
Darkest Fantasy Power Couples From Film and Story (according to me):
Dracula & Mina - Obviously!
Special note here: One of my favorite, and in my opinion, most romantic renditions of this gothic horror story the ballet Dracula performed by The Colorado Ballet. It was on stage in the 2000s, while the company was under the direction of Martin Fredman, but I’m sure you could find some video clips of it on Youtube, if you’re interested.
Frankenstein & Inga - of the loved classic Bride of Frankenstein circa 1935
Mortician & Gomez - Oh my gosh, yess! I adore these two. And (enter shameless plug here) while not at all as humorous of a pair, I definitely had Tish and her “Mon Cherie” on the brain while I was writing Odile and Azarus.
Herman and Lily Munster - of The Munsters, I mean no list would be complete amiright?
Imhotep and Ahmanet - Villain couple from The Mummy. Who didn’t find these two in the 1999 version of this film just drop dead sexy? Pun absolutely intended. If you say you didn’t, you’re lying.
Sweeny Todd & Miss Lovitt - Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter did the perfect portrayal of this super creepy pair in the 2007 film version. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
Victor & Victoria - of Corpse Bride
Jack Skellington & Sally - Love, love, love these two stars from another, yet another Tim Burton classic. The Nightmare Before Christmas is great because it serves the public by providing the dual offering of both a Halloween and a Christmas film.
Ichabod Crane & Katerina - of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
Spike & Buffy - just had to throw the two in here. Ya know, for the Buffy fans!
Edward Scissorhands & Kim - Is it just me or are we noticing a Tim Burton and Johnny Depp theme??? Regardless, I love these two!
Ed & Lorraine Warren - Talk about scary! And based on a real-life husband and wife team of paranormal investigators. Watch their creepy film inspirations and portrayals in the Amityville Horror series and The Conjuring movies. Can I just say, I’m really glad my husband isn’t a ghost hunter, because that would be it for me!
The Phantom & Christine - The Phantom of the Opera has inspired so many film, tv and stage iterations, and, uh yes, I think I’ve seen probably all of them. But if you’ve ever read Gaston Leroux’s 1910 novel, you are in for the treat of some beautiful prose.
Gail Weathers & Dewey Riley - of Scream, No list would be complete without this on-again, off-again pair.
Chucky & Tiffany - Can I just say, aaaaaaaa!! I’ll have nightmares for weeks now.
Star & David, or is it Michael? - of Lost Boys Even though she ends up with Michael, there is a lot of debate out there that David was her first love. 80s kids, what are your thoughts???
Jareth & Sarah - Because, I mean who didn’t watch Labyrinth and think “If I were Sarah, I’d totally stay in la la land with the goblin king.” Again, this is might be a child of the 80s thing.
Seymour & Audrey - of Little Shop of Horrors Can we all sing “Suddenly Seymour” together now? That would make my day!
Brad & Janet - Another “obviously!” here. The two young lovers had no idea what they were in for when they sought refuge in the eerie mansion depicted in the cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The film version is undeniably Susan Sarandon’s best work. Don’t quote me on that. Now I can’t stop laughing.
Adam & Barbra - of Beetlejuice Who doesn’t fall in love with this wonderful, deceased pair every time they see this 1988 movie?
Okay, that’s my list. Although I did my best, I know it is in no way exhaustive. You know the drill, Monsters: Leave any of your favorites that I missed down in comments or in a reply.
